Chaz Bear, aka Toro y Moi, is a creative trailblazer. Having just released his sixth studio album Outer Peace he has worked with contemporary giants, Tyler the Creator, Travis Scott, Rome Fortune and SZA, while spending time behind the DJ boards and organizing gallery shows; Chaz keeps himself busy. The hard work is paying off and he has asserted himself as a creative force, earning praise from Kanye West and recently performing on The Ellen Show.
This morning NPR brought Toro y Moi’s Outer Peace to their Tiny Desk series. The set features versions of “Ordinary Pleasure,” “New House,” “Freelance,” and “Laws of the Universe” that are stripped of all synths and auto-tune. Exploring a sound entirely different than that of the studio albums we’re accustomed to, the acoustic versions bring a rawness and a genuineness that can only be experienced in an intimate, live setting like Tiny Desk. Heavily electronic or not, the sound throughout the entire set is kept upbeat despite it being an acoustic set. The result is something undeniably groovy.
