We’re living in a dystopian hell-scape. Global blight, outright fascists, virtue signaling social media thought police, escapist lust for the colonization of mars and other planets. It feels like we’re on the way to living in the world of Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Philip K. Dick was a genius through and through as well as a prolific speed freak. Through a string of marriages, divorces, suicide attempts and commercial failures he produced 44 novels and 121 short stories in the Science Fiction genre.
Androids is the story of a bounty hunter in San Francisco whose job is to seek and destroy escaped androids (andys) from Mars. Created to help human beings colonize mars in an effort to escape a poisoned earth, androids become increasingly real and sentient, many of them not realizing they are in fact androids at all. If this sounds familiar it’s because Blade Runner was based on this very book.
The book is wonderful and pairs especially well with the current times. Nothing like cracking open a good book detailing American wasteland under the smoke laden California sky. A quick read too, hop over to your local used book store and pick up a copy, it is well worth it.
