I Thank God Everyday
You said something beautiful
in Christianity class.
You said—
love is not tolerance.
There were so many snow angels
that day.
I shuffled home in one heap of
dark wool.
In one hunched
movement.
I said, yes, of course,
love is not tolerance.
I remember ripping into
your bicycle that December
night. I tore the wheels
on the incline.
The air was so cold that it felt
like metal.
Like tying that little loop
around your
milk tooth.
Like slamming the door
And watching the white fleck
fling
Across the room.
I will never be younger than I am now.
I have never been older than I am now.
Some parents teach their kids that
Love is tolerance.
Yes, of course, they do.
Especially when they never kiss.
I’m so glad that I found you in this
Snowstorm.
You look stunning against
the Winter light.
Some glowing cure.
The world has
never been
Brighter.
