Well Splashers, Did You Listen?
When Splash House comes to mind, probably very few of you think, “Wow I can’t wait to hear some of my favorite songs from the last sixty years!” Of course not; this is the pool-party culmination of millennial music culture, featuring the hottest sounds in house, techno, and electronic…
But then Justice goes and does that.
On Saturday night, the legendary French duo treated Splashers to an hour-and-a-half medley that interwove their own classic tunes with some of the biggest hits from every decade since the ’60s.
A “Genesis” + “Welcome To The Jungle” opening hinted at what was to come before Justice kicked off the throwbacks with Village People’s “YMCA” (1978). Mixing into it from their iconic French electropop, they caught the crowd completely off-guard.
Now, we’ve seen a lot of YMCA plays in our day–a lot–but this one topped them all…The Renaissance ERUPTED.
Jumping, beaming Splashers sang/screamed/gesticulated along as the sun edged behind the mountains and drenched the desert in golden hour. Potted plants were picked up and used as totems. A gigantic inflatable unicorn was heaved back and forth across the dance floor in a game of catch. Girls were standing (not sitting) on shoulders. No matter whose eye you caught, it was clear that everyone was thinking the same thing: “This is fucking NUTS!”
From there, the energy only rose as Justice D.A.N.C.E.’d between their own catalog and throwbacks including:
“It’s Tricky” – Run DMC (1986)
“I’m So Excited” – The Pointer Sisters (1982)
“I Love Rock and Roll” – Joan Jett & the Blackhearts (1981)
“Simon Says” – Pharoahe Monch (1999)
“Still D.R.E.” – Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg (1999)
“Hellifornia” – Gesaffelstein (2013)
“Be My Baby” – The Ronettes (1965)
“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” – Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell (1966)
“Don’t Stop Me Now” – Queen (1979)
To those that opted for the progressive, versatile stylings of Dirty South or the bass-fueled mastery of TroyBoi – you didn’t make a bad choice.
Just…you may not have made the right choice, as it is unlikely that Splash House will ever see a set like Justice’s ever again.
