The Ultimate Collection of Free Chance The Rapper Mixtapes, Tracks, & Collaborations

by Dustin Trauernicht - December 18, 2013

Chance The Rapper has had undoubtedly one of the most successful, if not the most successful, music careers of 2013. For those who were not familiar with the ad lib spitting, drug toting Chicago emcee that is Chance The Rapper prior to his breakout, high school suspension-inspired mixtape #10Day, you are in for a surprise. For those who have only listened to 2013’s critically-acclaimed Acid Rap, you are really in for a treat. Sure, Acid Rap has given Chance some mainstream exposure, garnering attention and collabs from some big names — Lil Wayne, Childish Gambino, and Justin Bieber, to name a few. But what most of Chance’s fans don’t know is that the acid rapper has been releasing a steady stream of music, often under a name other than Chance The Rapper, for the past 5 years.

At Chicago’s Skinner Elementary School, Chance had a humble beginning in the industry, going by the name “Chano” alongside his friend Justin, known as J-Emcee. During his freshman year at Jones College Prep, Chance released his first project in 2008, a promising collection of tracks put out under the moniker Instrumentality. Chance has come a long way since 2008, currently coasting off the success of Acid Rap and approaching the end of a national tour. These days he’s hard at work on his third major Chance The Rapper project, a debut full-length album tentatively titled The Social Experiment.

With the end of his big year approaching, I’ve compiled a complete collection of Chance’s work. I’m hitting you with everything — from his early Instrumentality releases all the way up to his latest collab with Bieber. Let’s dig in.

This Is How It’s Done – August 1, 2008

There’s not a lot to be said about this project, as it’s been all but lost in the depths of the internet. The first two projects were released on, which has since been taken down along with everything uploaded to it. I was able to put together a tracklist from this picture on Chano’s old Facebook page, which dates back to August 1, 2008, but had no luck hunting down any of the tracks themselves.

Have one of these? Are you Chance the Rapper? Hit us up.

Wake Up/Beddy Bye – March 3, 2009

In 2009, Chance and Justin teamed up again for their second project, Wake Up/Beddy Bye. Another project lost to the demise of, I was able to piece together a bit more of this project with links scattered around the internet. Originally titled “Wake Up”, the project name changed to realize the importance of the last track on the mixtape, “Beddy Bye”, which may be one of the most emotional tracks Chance has written to date. The video for this song, along with many others, has been deleted from Youtube but you can still catch it on Chano’s old Facebook page here. You can also hear some input from Chance in this early interview where he talks about the inspiration for the track.

Good Enough – February 20, 2010

Good Enough is the third album from Instrumentality, and is perhaps the point where we really start to get an indication of Chance’s future success. The project is highlighted by “Home Again”, a track created in response to Chance staying in Chicago rather than relocating to DC, and can almost be thought of as a reprise to “Beddy Bye”. I pulled the official tracklist from Instrumentality’s blogger page, but there’s a bit of a discrepancy between the list and what is actually offered on the mixtape. I’m not sure if the rest of the tracks were cut, or if they were lost with the rest of the earlier tracks, but this is what we have.

Back To School Pack – September 15, 2010

Back To School Pack is a short project that was released in late 2010, and was the last release from Chance and Justin under the Instrumentality name. “Dear Chicago Summer” stands out as a smart, socially-conscious track on which Chance comments on violent crime in Chicago, a theme that would resurface on Acid Rap‘s “Paranoia”. We also get to hear an early version of the #10Day track “Nostalgia” and even get an early video that wasn’t covered up completely before it’s re-release on future projects.

#5Day – September 22, 2011

#5Day is the first release from Chance after his decision to move on as a solo artist rather than as part of the group act Instrumentality. Consisting of five songs that are all on the full version of #10Day, #5Day was nothing but a hype project to build some excitement for the release of #10Day which would come a few months down the road.

#10Day – April 3, 2012

This is where the real story of Chance The Rapper starts. During his senior year of high school, Chance served a ten-day suspension that would end up being the creative impetus behind the completion of a tracklist previewed on 2011’s #5Day. With the momentum provided by the serendipitous suspension, Chance worked during the next few months on what would become a groundbreaking, full-length project, and one what would establish Chance The Rapper as a force to be reckoned with in the hip-hop community.

And while it may have been almost four years since Chance had released his first project, he was only getting started. #10Day, as we now know, was just the tip of the iceberg — and nobody had any idea what was about to come next.

Acid Rap – April 30, 2013

Now being called the best mixtape of 2013 by Rolling Stone magazine, Acid Rap rocketed Chance into the spotlight, and you better believe he hasn’t looked back since. I’m not sure if there’s a rapper out there who hasn’t dropped the “my mixtape is better than your album” line, but I am sure Chance didn’t need it on Acid Rap — the proof was right in front of your face, whether you liked it or not.

From charting a free mixtape on the Billboard Top Hip-Hop/R&B albums list (albeit illegally) to touring with Mac Miller and Earl Sweatshirt, to dropping out-of-nowhere collaborations with some of the biggest entertainers in the world, Acid Rap flipped the world of rap music on it’s head and introduced millions to the wild and wonderful mind of Chance The Rapper. And from the looks of it, he’s not going anywhere.

Social Experiment – Coming Soon

With little budget, experience or time for preparation, the team and I put together this #SocialExperiment Tour 2013. My first Tour. 43 shows. 18 person crew. 4 piece band. 1 Tour bus. 1 raw ass RV. This video represents positivity, love, friendship, musicianship, support and a whole lot of hard work. Big thanks and a Merry Xmas to every single person that made this possible, and everyone else who supported me like crazy this year.
