A little snare here and there, and you have Brenton Duvalls‘ new Hoodie remix, which he apparently whipped up in his hotel room. It doesn’t stray too far from Markowitz’ Leap Year original, but that’s in good taste – that was an ambitious track to begin with. Here, we get the best of both worlds with Hoodie’s swagger (sorry, he’s got it in this track) and Brenton’s hiphop production sensibilities. Grab for free below!
This is truly one of the coolest uses of sampling I’ve heard in a long time. San Francisco native Richie Cunning uses the dreamy violin, tings, and trumpets of “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and ads some drums to create something amazing. In his bio, he explains his inspiration as well as how he titled the song.
It was originally titled “Trilly Wonka”, but I decided to go with the title that would be more likely to trick people looking for something else into listening to it.
Well Richie, it worked. And I am truly impressed. Kollect this track, you do NOT want to miss it!

With Spring Break right around the corner, DJ Trademark supplies us with his second Party Pack mix (Spring Break Edition). And once again, he litters the mix with an abundance of more unknown tracks that all mesh and flow well together. Great thing about the mix is that it doesn’t maintain the same beat throughout but rather takes you through a variety of different sounds and beats. In essence, this second mix by DJ Trademark gives you a little bit of everything all the while keeping the party vibe at a high level. I loved the intro track and the progressions Trademark did into each new segment, which makes this mix a frontrunner to be played during your Spring Break beach party throwdowns.

I’m a huge OnCue fan, and seeing Feel Tall hitting the remix table made me uncomfortable at first. I think Cuey’s original work is always so creative and well-produced, it would certainly take a good deal of effort to top them. This remix by The Soundmen fits the bill. I don’t like it as much as the original, but I appreciate the completely flipped feel that these guys bring to Cuey’s song. It’s a new vibe and a new style that I could dig. Which do you prefer, the remix or the original?

It was exactly last March when I featured a Canadian producer by the name of DJ Cones on the K with his 2nd Volume of Stethoscope. Here we have Vol. 3, and though I’m not as wildly impressed this time around, I still found a handful of tracks to be pretty captivating. Having mastered the art of minimal production, Cones lends a calming effect to these simplistic tracks: classic verses from some of hiphop’s greatest, reborn via organic instrumentals. Stethoscope is creatively different than what we’re used to, and that’s exactly why I’m a fan. “Steal the Lights” and “Thrown Away” may be my favorite interpretations, but listen for yourself. Ease your way into the week and Kollect these key laidback, refreshing hiphop tracks.
