The Heist – Easter Egg

I found an Easter egg. No, not the holiday item that is full of candy. I’m talking about the virtual “easter egg” that takes you by surprise and (usually) brightens your day. Now apply that to mashups and you got – surprise! – Easter Egg.

Hailing from the Portland area, I was name-dropped this artist and I haven’t stopped playing his The Heist album yet. With a Girl Talk-esque style, Easter Egg creates tracks that flow from one sample to the next with no stopping point for over an hour. The album, as a whole, samples lots of hip hop/rap vocal samples and a variety of instrumental samples that give it a funky fresh vibe – perfect for a pregame session or as background music if you’re feeling productive. Now granted, some samples may be a little cheesy (“No Scrubs” at the beginning), but there are plenty of moments where I caught myself singing along to the album – Adele with the Sting instrumental sample is but one. So if you want to get away from those energetic high intensity mashups, then let Easter Egg surprise with what he has to offer.

Hang Over From You – IanJ

I’m not a big fan of the intro on this one, but it picks up as the song goes. This is a remix, so I think that instrumental contributes a lot to the way the song works, but I will give credit to IanJ for refreshing this piece and making a fun party track. Take a listen and grab this one for free!

Let It Shine – Phil Ade

Haven’t heard much from Phil Ade in a while besides him being featured on the song Are You Ready by Logic, but this track seemed to jump out at me. I like my hip hop to tell a story, and Ade’s flow in Let It Shine is easy to follow along with. This track seems to resemble a favorite of mine, Skizzy Mars, and I definitely look forward to hearing what Phil Ade has in store for us in the future.

    Common Knowledge – Asher Roth

This new release from Asher Roth, expected to be on his upcoming mixtape Pabst & Jazz showcases a more mature and laid-back style from the “I Love College” boy we saw only a couple years ago. Produced by Blended Babies, the electronic-jazz sound and simple drum loops lets Asher’s verses shine through as he tells his story. There is no set date for the release of his mixtape, however this track makes me anticipate what is yet to come. Happy Kollecting!

Off topic but, I love your writing. Poetic, but doesn’t over-shadow the music you’re writing about. Keep it up

This Is Not A Love Song (ft. Accent) – Kinetics & One Love

This is one of those tracks that tells a great story, and of course, you can’t go wrong with some Kinetics & One Love on production and the verses. I’m really enjoying the instrumental on this one – it’s relatively simple, but it carries the song and let’s Kinetics’ lyrics shine. Take a listen and snag this one for free.

Tonight is the Night – Outasight Official Video

Yonkers native Outasight‘s track [which impressively landed itself on Pepsi's current "Music Icons" commercial] “Tonight is the Night” is all about indulging in the moment. The Warner Bros artist just released the visuals for the hit track, and they perfectly compliment the notion of the young fast life. It’s so thrilling to see a relatively unknown artist we’ve featured in past months rise to this level – and he’s holding on to his genuine creativity and class with this liberating, fun video. Peep the visuals to get you in the Friday mindset!
