Young Sinatra: Undeniable – Logic Mixtape Mini-Review

The brand new and highly-anticipated 21-track concept release from rapper, Logic, accomplishes many things. The title track (“Young Sinatra III”) carries on Logic’s effective comparison to ole’ Frank as his “emcee aura”, on which you’ll recognize verses from his now-vintage original “Young Sinatra” cut. In addition to carrying on that tradition, Logic allows many characteristics to emerge throughout the tape. A mixture of old-school beats, thoughtful speech recordings, the occasional recognizable sample and some singing all surface on Logic’s third effort – all contributing to the multi-faceted package that the Maryland native has been wrapping up for his loyal audience. Most of the tracks carry their own weight, and display differing sides of the artists’ vocal and lyrical abilities. I’ve respected the kid since “Mind of Logic”, and identify with his unyielding ambition. I encourage you to set aside some time and engage with his work – I can’t wait to see where he goes.

Key Track Breakdown:

“Inception” – If Logic’s outward attention to detail and his growing fan base aren’t evidence enough, this beautifully produced/vocally executed ode to his ambitions will be. Yes, it borrows from the 2010 film’s score, making for a short but sweet opener.
“What You Want” – Who knew that a slow-jam could actually provide me with a smile instead of a cringing expression? This is sleek.
“Relaxation” – Love the jazzy production, quirky mentality (those comical female lines) and that Logic “demeanor” he loves to rep.
“Tic Tac Toe” – One of the darkest productions, with a kill-all mentality and a straight-fire flow that explodes at the 1:45 mark. [See previous post]
“Numbers” – A previously-released single, which should have caught your attention immediately. [See previous post]
“Do Ya Like” – Ah, an Adele sample. A fitting choice, considering her timeless, old-fashioned tone. I could do without the gun-shots; seemingly out of place, but I guess this adds ‘edge’ to a rough-around-the-edges sensual jam.
“We Get High” – Thankfully this is one of the few times we hear “get high”, because personally I’m tired of that topic. Production elevates this one, and I dig it.
“The Spotlight” – J.U.S.T.I.C.E. sample alert, but Logic has fun with a danceable jam.

I’m afraid we’re all going to have to come to a realization. Robert “Bobby” Bryson Hall II’s talent is undeniable.

Just For Tonight – Twin City

The other day I was scouring the internet for new music, and I stumbled on a band by the name of Twin City. If you are a fan of reggae/rock/alternative music, then you may be familiar with one of my favorite groups, The Holdup. Well to my surprise, I discovered that one of the lead singers of Twin City is none other than Mike Garmany, the lead vocalist for The Holdup; The other being James Melo of Young Science. So now I have a new addiction that I have to share with all of you. One of the tracks that stands out to me is titled “Just For Tonight,” which includes a sample of R.E.M’s “Losing My Religion.” It’s a little slower-paced than a lot of material we feature here on The Kollection, but I think with summer rapidly approaching this is the perfect song to play at a backyard barbecue, yeah? Make sure to throw Twin City a like on Facebook, as well as download their mixtape!

Back to the Grain (EP) – Chill Bump

While surfing the interwebs, I struck gold. This is something that is out of the ordinary, since the origin of this EP is from France. Bankal (the producer) and MC Miscellaneous make up the duo Chill Bump, and their sound is so addicting I know that all of you kollectors will love it as well. The simple beats are hard hitting, with the perfect blend of hip-hop and a hint of some dubstep, and the story-telling lyrics tie together in a harmonious blend of French awesomeness. The second track I added has awesome Spanish feel to it, which gives a lot of diversity to the entire tape. Make sure to grab this EP on their Bandcamp page pronto!

Love that 1st track, not warming up the 2nd one, however. Good find!

These Vile Creatures EP – Helicopter Showdown

Over the last few months, we here at The DK have posted some work from Helicopter Showdown and some of the collabs they’ve done as they got more and more recognition in the EDM community. Their signature sound is often characterized by heavy bass and perfectly chaotic oscillations. As they continued to grind out shows and tracks, the sound slowly refined itself and became their own. The four track free EP is the clumination of hardwork and the tireless quest to find the perfect sound. What I love so much about these songs is how refined and unique HS’s sound has become. There are a lot of great melodic riffs with the br00tal drop we all love from them in almost every song. I really enjoyed listening (actually still listening) to this awesome extended play. As a token of appreciation, this EP is free for all the fans that helped Helicopter Showdown reach 20K fans on Facebook. So go ahead and swoop this banger up and show these guys some love!
