Fleet Foxes Sing: Love Song Covers

The cloned Fleet Foxes group “Fleet Foxes Sing” released a handfull of new covers today in honor of The Commodification of Love Day, featuring versions of classics by Elvis, Al Green, Stevie Wonder and more. Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling In Love” is one of my favorite songs of all time, so I’m particularly fond of Fleet Foxes Sing’s choice to record it, but “Little Bit,” “Halo” and “Dreamlover” are also pretty enjoyable covers. Kollect them all and have a happy day celebrating the love (friends, family, lovers, whoever) in your life.

[...] Oh, and Fleet Foxes love song covers! [...]

These are great. But it becomes pretty obvious that the Fleet Foxes had no part in ‘em. Wonder how far this guy would have gotten if he hadn’t ripped Fleet Foxes’ name from right under them…

I Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas Cover) – I Am Noxious

Well isn’t this just a lovely magical cover of the big bad Black Eyed Peas obnoxiously popular, “I Got a Feeling”. Copenhagen’s I Am Noxious completely flipped this, making a soothing, more sentimental version of a fist-pumping original. What’s amazing is that I couldn’t even tell this was the Pea’s jam until I heard the familiar lyrics in the chorus; the originality found I Am Noxious’ arrangement is commendable. Turning a track that became so stale into a beautiful new concoction is no easy feat. Grab this, and check back for more from this new artist.

P.S. I don’t care about Valentine’s Day, but that album artwork is pretty spot-on, eh? Kollect on!

Midnight City feat. Mandy Lee (M83 Cover) – The Knocks

The Knocks are making moves in a serious way. The NY-based duo have recently opened for M.I.A., Ellie Goulding, and Sleigh Bells; they’re playing SXSW in March; and their debut full-length record will be released in September. As if all of that wasn’t enough, their cover of M83′s “Midnight City” rivals the original…not a small feat given that this was one of the biggest songs of 2011. Fusing Mandy Lee’s stunning with some mad fun dance-fueled electricity, The Knocks absolutely kill this cover, and it’s definitely one that belongs in your Indie Kollection. In fact, put this on at a party and you’ll be the coolest DJ in town and everyone will want to be your friend! Go, you!

An interesting cover, but I think we can agree that the original Midnight City has no equal…

        Fleet Foxes Sing: Pop Covers

I’ve been made a fool! A clown! A buffoon! I was under the genuine impression that this was in fact Robin Pecknold and the pack covering Rihanna, Lykke Li, Robyn, Vampire Weekend, Miike Snow, and Whitney, and I was overwhelmed with childlike shock & awe to learn that this is indeed not Fleet Foxes, but a band that sounds just. like. them. called “Fleet Foxes Sing.” It’s pretty incredible actually– one of the most talented sound-a-likes I’ve heard in my day, which is nothing but high praise given that they sound like Fleet Foxes, the musical manifestation of the smoothest, creamiest hot fudge you’ve ever chomped on.

In addition to these six, you can find more recordings from these guys on their website, including covers of James Blake, Madonna, Beyonce, Al Green, Adele, and many more. My favorite of these six is “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” with “We Found Love,” “Little Bit” and “Dancing on My Own” in a three-way tie for second. Take a listen, grab the downloads, and let us know which is your favorite!

Million Dollar Bill (Dawes Cover) – Cillie Barnes

Ahh, one of my favorite indie vocalists covering one of my favorite songs. I got the chance to see Dawes play an intimate little set a few years ago at a festival, and they completely hooked me with their song-writing. Vanessa Jeanne Long (Cillie Barnes) takes “Million Dollar Bill” and adds her own flare, slightly tweaking a few lyrics to make it her own but unarguably doing justice to the original. Sidenote: please look up the lyrics to this song: it will steal your entire soul. I love Vanessa’s voice, and I love her for choosing this song to cover for the Voice Project. Enjoy.

Also keep your eyes out for an exclusive interview with Cillie Barnes coming soon to the Indie K!

The Morning (The Weeknd Cover) – Saskatchewan

Orlando’s dream-pop group, Saskatchewan covers “The Morning”, my favorite track from The Weeknd. Their version is certainly dreamier and doesn’t become lost in a daze – but rather trickles into a sensual near-six minute cover that does the original justice. I’ll even compare this sound to an 80′s love ballad. Usually not my style, but the production and lingering guitars which support the vocals lured me in completely. Kollect this one up for free above!
