Pure Magic (Album) – Bruneaux
I wanted to start off this post with a video – one part of a series of videos that are pretty sweet. While The Kollection focuses a great deal on music, we’re also all about creativity and the above video certainly shows that. The creativity of dance shown through the musical creativeness of Girl Talk. Girl Talk’s All Day is one-of-a-kind, and while many mashers have striven to recreate the magic of Girl Talk, many have come up short.
However, one mashup artist has risen to the task of creating not only a track or two but an entire continuous album that rivals Girl Talk. The album is Pure Magic and the artist is Bruneaux. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, Bruneaux is like Girl Talk 2.0, and Pure Magic is evidence. With over 200+ artists used in the 11 track album (yeah, my jaw dropped too), Bruneaux certainly has the sample quantity but does he have the quality? You’d be crazy to not think so.
I couldn’t even name you all the artists that are used (thankfully Bruneaux gives us a list) but what I do know is that some of the sample combinations have me laughing, have me smiling, have me jamming, and more. Lil Kim and Fat Joe paired with Hanson? Yeah, you can find that in the first track. Ever wondered what Fat Man Scoop sounded like on top of some Shakira? Jump ahead to the fourth track. Heck, the eighth track cleverly pairs LL Cool J with The Ting Tings then flows into some Lupe dropping bars over Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zero’s “Home”. And those are just a couple of samples out of many in each individual track.
Are there some areas that are a little iffy? Yeah – individually, I could do without Beyonce, Rick Astley, J-Kwon, and maybe some others. But when I listen and re-listen to the pairings, I realize that’s what makes this album magical. Bruneaux’s ability to bring back songs from the past (whether I originally liked them or not) and pair them with genres that they were (probably) never intended to be heard on top of is special and very Girl Talk-esque. So whether you are looking for your pregame music, riding in your car, or just looking for some great listening tunes, make sure to Kollect this album below. And if you like what you hear, go on over to Bruneaux’s Facebook and give him a “like” and thank him for the magic that has graced our ears.

Only problem with this list, it’s missing mgk’s lace up at the 1 spot
Lace Up was definitely a fresh mixtape – one of many that couldn’t be included in this roundup, however!
you should get polls going to let all the kollectors decide too. solid list however i think that wale and chiddy should have been switched
Good point Talk. It seems a bit late to add polls to the existing top 10, but we will look into starting polls in the new year!
where the fuck is chris webby on this list
Not on it
I really don’t think no genre deserves the # 2 spot…
Edward, what was your favorite tape of the year?
how is webby not here?
Webby definitely deserves to be on here. This is the very first time you’ve disappointed me kollection. Smh.
1. Kush & OJ – Wiz Khalifa
2. Mac Miller – K.I.D.S
3. Wale – More About Nothing
4. J. Cole – Friday Night Lights
5. Big Sean – Finally Famous Volume 3
6. B.O.B – No Genre
7. Chris Webby – Best In The Burbs
8. MGK – Lace Up
9. The Swelly Express – Chiddy Bang
10. Sam Adams – Party Records
I gotta say, I disagree with #10, but I like the rest of your list. Honestly, it’s tough picking a “Top 10″ when there were truly so many amazing tapes this year. Hell, Webby’s White Noise LP is among our top downloaded tapes of all time. This would be a good one to take to a vote, shall we?
Kush & OJ is definately the best mixtape of 2010 hands downnn!!! and Finally Famous Volume 3 is right behind it!
hey guys thanks for all the feedback. only kollectors are this passionate about music!!!
with regards to webby, I did overlook the white noise lp, which as brian said is one of our most downloaded mixtapes of all time. even though i personally don’t listen to chris webby that often, i have a lot of respect for what he’s doing and obviously he’s making great music if so many people are noticing his absence on this list.
as for kush & oj and best in the burbs, I tried to keep the list to mixtapes that the kollection has posted (a lot of people would say fabolous’ there’s no competition 2 was the best drop of the year but we didn’t post it). i’m glad you guys are keeping us honest, and it’s great to be able to share/discuss different artists with other people who know a thing or two about music. there was so much good music this year, ten spots didn’t do the artists justice.
hope you guys liked some of the others on the countdown, can’t wait to see what happens in 2011!
Well put Camel. Just keep bringin us the hits and we’ll stay happy.
To be and independent music blog you guys sure did who heavy on the mainstream names. I’ll agree that Mac Miller’s K.I.D.S. Tape was number one, but I’d argue for like Eddy B & Tim Gunter’s Dear North Carolina Welcome Back. If you’re talking mainstream I don’t know how you could leave off Chris Webby and Sam Adams; although generally known as ‘frat rap’ both were produced extremely well. Overall a good mix, but I’d look a little deeper when naming the best of the year. Keep up the good work…
